Vice-President Academic Candidates

Asma Khamis

Hey Science & ArtSci! I’m Asma (she/her/elle), a second-year Biochemistry major who’s ecstatic to be running to represent you as SUS VP Academic in the upcoming 2022-2023 year! Having been FUSS Co-President in my first year and SUS Representative to SSMU in my second, I have been serving the science community through social and academic events and advocating for students’ needs in front of SSMU and faculty for most of my undergraduate career. Involved in the Faculty of Science committee, SSMU Mental Health Committee, and SSAMMOSA, and helping spearhead the Strategic Plan for Academic Wellness, I would love the opportunity to contribute my communication skills, leadership, passion, approachability, and experience to bettering the student academic experience. Accessibility, academic wellness, and advocacy through policy are important areas of focus I would bring to the role. My platform includes advocating through the Academic Policy Committee at Senate, facilitating the creation of crowdsourced course insight and information pages across departments, organizing faculty wellness and EDI workshops, aiming for a hybrid Grad Fair in Fall 2022, and maintaining the existing connections with the Deans of Science and administration that I have already cultivated in my role on SUS. Feel free to read more about my experience and platform on my Facebook event page! I’d also be happy to answer any questions you have through email (asma.khamis@mail.mcgill.ca). Thank you so much for reading and for participating in the SUS electoral process - hoping to meet you soon & have an excellent day!

Samantha Gorle

Hi Science and ArtSci! I’m Sam, I use she/her/elle pronouns, and I’m a U2 Biology major and Natural History minor. I’m thrilled to be running for SUS VP Academic this year and would sincerely appreciate your vote! I’ve been involved in the McGill Biology Student Union as VP Academic and President, which have prepared me to take on the position of SUS VP Academic.

As SUS VP Academic I will focus on academic equity and student wellness by improving awareness of academic policies and helping connect students to the resources they need. I also intend to increase departmental support and communication by providing more comprehensive training for departmental VP Academics and working more closely with them to resolve complaints. Another initiative I am committed to is a more streamlined way to communicate information about curricular opportunities like research, internships, and workshops in and around the McGill community. I will also work closely with the committees under the academic portfolio to plan the Graduate Fair, Academia Week, and Academic events, while integrating general feedback from the science community.

At the end of the day, I want to see you succeed, and am committed to helping you to the best of my ability. If you want more information, please check out my platform, and feel free to contact me with questions.

Vice-President Communications Candidates

Ava Naphin

Hello science and art & science students! My name is Ava Naphin (she/her/hers) and I’m a U1 pharmacology student running to be your 2022-23 vice-president of communications. I’ve been involved with the SUS for about a year, having worked as an executive member and social media manager for our environment committee (SUSEC). That experience, alongside my leadership of Science Freshman Orientation (frosh), sparked my interest in serving the science students of McGill on a greater level. Since first year, I’ve also been on the outreach team for Lotus Initiative, a new SSMU club which brings dance and mental health workshops to our community. Working for Lotus has educated me in the intricacies of communication with the student body beyond those I share classes with and granted me a passion for interacting with and improving the lives of my fellow students.

If elected, I plan to enact five principal goals:

  1. Increased student body social engagement

  2. Improved methods of feedback reception

  3. Expanded French translation services within SUS

  4. Broadened content in our handbook, the SUS 101

  5. Commitment to Committee Publicizing

For more information on any of these, please read my full platform, which can be found on my Facebook page.

I am a diligent, driven, vivacious leader who is well-versed in numerous methods of correspondence, and it would be an honour to represent you on the Science Undergraduate Society next year. Please consider voting Ava for SUS VP Communications!

Through FUSS, I have accumulated experience working with Listservs, social media, and interdepartmental collaborations. In high school, I was lead of my school’s jack.org chapter for 2 years, where I organized meetings and managed the instagram account. For more information about my platform, please check on my Facebook event: Please check out my platform on Facebook! Overall, I have extensive experience working with organization’s public social media accounts and leading members of a team towards a common goal. Vice-President External Candidates

Sophie Luo

N/A

I'm Sophie, a U1 Neuroscience student and the SUS' current executive administrator! I'm happy to be running for VP External this year. Check out my platform below:

Sponsorships:

As VP External, I will continue to make sponsorship packages available to current clubs and councils, and work hard to secure new funding sponsors, make packages easily accessible for applicants, and maximize funding for meaningful student initiatives.

After Hours:

Students deserve a break from academics and a hangout to look forward to through the week -- and After Hours has been a yearly tradition for this very reason! This year, I plan to bring After Hours back into full swing and keep this space alive for students' connection and interaction.

Clubs and Services:

McGill's clubs and services are a huge part of the student experience, and they deserve all the support possible from councils like SUS. From booking events venues and promoting initiatives, to securing funding and making inquiries, I will implement a more effective communication system between clubs and services and the SUS. By being responsive and inclusive, I hope to help clubs and services thrive this year!

Vice-President Internal Candidates

Andres Perez Tiniacos

Hello Science and Arts&Science! My name is Andrés (Andy) Pérez Tiniacos (he/him/il), and I am running for Vice-president Internal!

Equity

  • Ensure a smooth transition back to a fully in-person frosh by increasing leaders and staff training as well as accommodating for students that do not feel comfortable attending high density events.

  • Expand the current training of captains and staff of Science Games to cover event-specific issues which include but are not limited to: harm reduction, logistics, consent and sexual violence, equity, and sustainability.

Inclusivity

  • Expand the involvement in sponsorship of local and BIPOC businesses during orientation week by associations with cultural associations on campus and in the city.

  • Increase cultural activities among the events planned by the portfolio through partnerships with cultural associations on campus.

Sustainability

  • Budget restructuring to redirect expenses from non-essentials.

  • Maximize offered goods while minimizing left-over products waste by ordering them based on past reports rather than standard distribution.
